    Don't do what John says.
  2. 1987 wing starter rebuild

    Goldwing Technical Forum
I did this to my '85 Interstate. I bought the bike for $500 because the starter failed and PO parked it. Then it sat for 10 years. The 86 and 87 have a tab in the case behind the starter to hold the starter chain sprocket in place when you pull the starter out. Earlier 4 cylinder wings didn't...
  3. 1981 gold wing leaking oil multiple spots

    Goldwing Technical Forum
The most common place the 4 cylinder GW leak from is the shifter seal. The is especially true if the bike has a toe-heel shifter as part of floor boards. The shifter shaft is not supported at the output end and any torque can push the lever out of alignment and cause the seal to pop out. My 1200...

  7. owning more than one bike

    General Motorcycle Discussion Forum
Motorcycles are like golf clubs. In golf a different club is needed depending on the shot. In motorcycling a different bike is needed depending on the ride. I have three bikes, but I think the right number is five. My '85 GL1200I is best for burning up the freeways. The '81 GlL100 Standard...
  8. Searching for answers for 1984 GL1200I, running very poorly

    Goldwing Technical Forum
I like to do the simple stuff first. Have you tried new plugs? Spark plugs can become gasoline fouled just like being oil fouled. The difference is you can see an oil fouled plug, but spotting a fuel fouled plug is much harder. If the carbs are off try filling the intake track with starting...
  9. 87 GL1200, Engine shut down

    Goldwing Technical Forum
One more item, the ignition switches can fail. There are kits out there to replace the electrical portion of the switch.
  10. The Pooch is Screwed.

    Goldwing Technical Forum
I thought you would use the one off the parts bike. I get it about clean connections, but dirty connections will make the voltage lower. There are different ways a voltage regulator can fail. It is possible for the portion of the regulator that controls the voltage to fail and allow the full DC...
  11. stator

    Goldwing Technical Forum
Sal, it comes down to how many times do you want to do this vs how much money you can or want to spend. I did this to my 1200 last year. glhonda gave me some good advice in post #9 of this thread: The Diva Killed the Battery. I used this stator from Ricks. It was a little pricy, but quality is...
  12. '86 GW restoration

I used these diaphragms in my '85. They are german engineered and made in Germany. They are very high quality, come with the required glue and clear instructions on how to install them...

Dennis, You should be able to measure the voltage across the battery terminals. There will be the battery voltage when the engine is off. If the charging system i shealthy you should see battery voltage at idle and then as the RPM increases the voltage will increase to about 14.1 volts. I have...

Happens to the best of us. I dropped my 12 last summer. It was fully loaded with about 150# of camp gear. It took a lot to pull it up. The technique in the video was very helpful.
  15. Please help me restore this old GL1200

    Goldwing Technical Forum
I installed my exhaust in one piece. It helps to support the rear with a jackstand or have a helper hold it in a raised position. Then lift the front and start getting some of the header bolts installed. I would like to see some videos of the motorbiking scene is Kuwait.

Bear protection, you really need a little more power. The G37 looks about right... to me anyway.
  17. Replacing Win10 HDD with SSD story

    Computer Talk
Can you recommend a primer for Linux? I put Ubuntu 16 on an old laptop. It ran well and I enjoyed the freedom from Microsoft. I never fully understood how the file structure worked. After 35 years of using Microsoft products all the way back to DOS 3.1 it is hard to change.
  18. Jim's 81 GL1100 Water Pump

    Goldwing Technical Forum
The 1200 FSM has a standard torque value chart on page 2-12. In the 1100 FSM torque values are shown on page 3-4. My copy of the 1100 FSM was printed in 1982 and does not show the '83 model. Not to over think this, but I like the description on the GoldwingDocs website. They say 9 foot pounds.
  19. Jim's 81 GL1100 Water Pump

    Goldwing Technical Forum
The engine I bought for this bike was leaking coolant into the oil. I'm replacing the water pump before the engine goes back into the bike. I cannot seem to find the torque values in either the GL1100 or GL1200 Factory Shop Manuals. These are 6MM bolts going into aluminum. Everything else on the...
  20. Led light effecting voltage

    Goldwing Technical Forum
Good for you to check the battery voltage. I would be looking at the battery level after about every two hours of riding. You will find out if it is boiling off and how often it needs filling. The other issue is life of the other bulbs on the bike. I think the '78 has front running lights. The...
