  1. 2004 GL1800 Roadsmith Trike

    For Sale/Wanted Forum
I inherited my dad's trike, and I don't really have a need for it so I'm looking to sell it. I'm located in Raleigh NC and I'm asking $12,000. It did have a problem with the starter being stuck after sitting for a while with the reverse left engaged, but rocking it back and forth to shimmy it...
  2. Late dad's trike won't start

    Trikes, Trailers and Sidecars
kill switch is on run (come on guys, just cause this isn't my bike doesn't mean I don't have a bike - mine's a GL1200 I bought from a neglectful owner and embraced the rattiness), bike is in neutral, reverse is off. I can hear a relay click kind of behind and under me on the left side. One...
  3. Late dad's trike won't start

    Trikes, Trailers and Sidecars
Hey all, my Dad passed away last december and now that we're finally coming to the end of all the paperwork and hoops to jump through for taking care of his estate, we're looking at what to do with his 04 GL1800 with a roadsmith trike kit. It won't start. Won't even turn over. Battery is...
  4. Starter issue with my late Dad's 1800 trike

    Trikes, Trailers and Sidecars
Hi all, A couple months ago, my dad suddenly passed away. While at his place deciding what to do with all his stuff, I tried to start his gl1800 with a roadsmith trike kit. I believe it's a 2004. I found that the reverse button was stuck in and got it unstuck, and heard the reverse...
  5. GL1200 Battery draining during ride

    Goldwing Technical Forum
that sounds like its still basically pulling the motor though. I imagine you have to yank the rear wheel and get the drive shaft out of the way to be able to do that, and possibly pull the radiator hoses off to get slack.

I can't pull a motor. I don't have a place to do it, the equipment to do it with, or any engine experience at all. I've worked on everything else on the bike, but the engine was always good so i never worked on it.

But then you've got an alternator hanging out in the rain (and I do ride it in the rain), and the bracket that the poorboy kit bolts to on top is cut off. Plus the poorboy kit is up to like 700 bucks now and that's what I paid for the bike to begin with.

my meter chose that moment to stop working. Fixed it, ran the test again. Two wires are good, one is showing less than half what it should be. Seems pretty conclusive. Anybody want to buy a Mad Max inspired gl1200 rat with a dead stator? I can't change it out myself and when I called...
  9. GL1200 Battery draining during ride

    Goldwing Technical Forum
I had intended to check on this today (yesterday, whatever. I'm at work on the third shift, it isn't tomorrow until I go to bed.) but instead I had to take my cage to a muffler shop to get it back driveable. That photo helps a lot, and yeah, all my stator wires are soldered. Seems like they...

So where do I get that kit? Does anyone have any photos of the objects in question? I'm having a hard time visualizing the actual plugs, since I haven't actually looked at the old one yet.

Tell me more about this solenoid connector. You're talking about someting just aft of the battery, right? I haven't checked anything in that region, I'll give it a look tomorrow. The regulator isn't a shingenden, but it's only a month or two old. I wasn't sure it was the only problem when I...

    Goldwing Technical Forum
Welp, guess that means its time to chuck it on craigslist. The cost of getting a new stator put in it is almost as high as the total amount I've invested buying and otherwise fixing the bike. Even a poorboy kit is just about the same price now as what I bought the bike for, and I'm not even...

So I've got an OK stator, new regulator, new battery, soldered wiring, etc, but my 86 GL1200 still drains the battery over time while I'm riding it. It takes a few hours to do it, but I've had it completely die while on the road. A quick jump later I was able to get it the last 5 miles to...
  14. Low pitch squeak from clutch

    Goldwing Technical Forum
Either way, I'm more inclined to blame the clutch itself, since the volume and pitch of the noise seems to be linked with the engine RPM and clutch engagement rather than the speed of the bike, and the noise starts before the bike starts moving.

    Goldwing Technical Forum
Yesterday on my way home from work, my valkyrie started making a low pitched squeaking noise when I would pull out from a stop. once I got going it went away, but it didn't sound happy at all during that initial clutch slip as the light turned green. Is my clutch dying? the bike is a 98...

    Goldwing Technical Forum
Good to know. I had already done the voltage test you mentioned earlier and got good results, so that rules out my stator. Gonna grab myself a regulator and the heap shall live again.

If the stator is shorted to ground, would it still pass the test that AZgl1800 posted?

Wow, I wish I had seen this a year ago. I've been lamenting my fried stator and lack of repair money for almost a whole year, then I do this test and find that its my regulator that's dead and my stator might be OK. Now I just gotta get my hands on a regulator asap.

When I did mine, I used a screwdriver and a pair of pliers to pull out the staples. sticking new ones in requires a pretty heavy-duty staplegun to puncture the plastic. don't worry too much if the new staples don't sink all the way in, as long as they're in enough to stay. Do make sure the...

seat on my gl1200 was completely shot when I got it (along with most of the rest of the bike). sank straight down to the pan when I sat on it. I popped some of the staples loose from the underside and stuffed additional foam in it (cut the foam to shape and add it on top), stapled the leather...
