Might be worth a try but mostly you set them by using a good tachometer, not the one on the bike.

hi and thx for the reply. where would i install the external tach. my bike tach is mechanical so
no electrics to place the 3rd wire.. red to 12v black to ground. the 3rd wire where
would it go??

I think you would have to hook it up to the pulse generators or the coils.

You would connect the tach to either coil, the blue or the yellow wire. If it has a 2 cylinder mode it would read right, I think. If you have to use 4 cyl mode it would read 1/2 actual RPM.
