1100 needing some help.

My brother in law just bought his first bike. He is 21 without much of a budget and I am hoping to help him out a little. I have not seen the bike yet, but he is describing an at idle and low speed knock coming from the lower end as he describes it. Otherwise he says it runs great. It has 77,000 miles on it. He said he also thinks it might have a valve noise on the right side. Does the 1100 have solid lifters or hydralic? Anyone have the clearance? I think he said this is an 83. He said he noticed the clutch slipping really bad when he rode it home, and then adjusted it at the lever and said it seems fine now. I am going to go visit him this weekend and see what I can help with. Thought I would look for pointers first. He lives in Anderson, IN just north of Indy, and I hope we can get home on the road on a reliable bike soon as this one needs to last him a while.

Thanks,

Staticman

Unsynchronized carbs will cause a knocking sound at idle and low RPM, hope that's all it is.
They have solid lifters. Clearance is .004" intake and .005" exhaust.

Yeppers, sounds like it needs a good carb sync. I'd also check the clutch cable adjustment on both ends of the cable.

Add some seafoam to the crankcase, run it for about 200 miles then change out the oil and filter. I use Delo 10w-40, availalbe at Walmart. The seafoam will clean off any varnish buldup on the clutch plates.
