I've had mine out a couple of times. Put the bike on the side stand, that will keep the chain hanging right where you can get to it. The chain will not fall off, the starter gear should slip out very easily.

Seems like you need a 7mm socket on the bolts for the starter. Just tie the gear shifter "up" and that will keep it out of the way. It helps to have a 1/4 inch drive swivel socket.

Very hard to knock the gesr out of the chain. If you get a new gear with a new starter you have to try to get the old gear out.

I used a wobble extension along with a swivel socket on mine. Lube that
o-ring up good. It makes for a snug fit.

Make that an 8mm and a universal joint.

Very nice thread on the reference and FAQ section. Close to the top in a dark orange color and titled starter refresh. Very informative and lots of step by step pictures.
