I purchased a 1100 GL interstate for $125.00 up and running with seals in the forks and the final drive and chik tirs, now up to $250.00. It is now painted USAAF WWII Green ( looking like a P-40, complete with Stars and sharks teeth). Than when I was getting the seals for the forks, I spotted a 1200 GL Aspencade, coved with dust in the corner of the shop, and I bought that for $2500.

Current ride is a R1200RT BMW and I bought that new in 06, now has 60K on it, Both the Wings have 75K Each on them.

Both of the wings are about to hit the road and I really cannot wait to get them out on the slab.

Question is

1. Is the 1200 Aspencade a good performer. I seem to remember 20 years ago when I had one but I cannot remember if it corners or handels well, How about some references on them, what should I be aware of or afraid of? Like breakdowns and weak areas. It has not been run in a few years but seems to have a strong engine, right now doing the rear brake seals beore I hit the reoad this week.

2. The 1100 GL, now that I got the 1200, what do I do with it? I don't think it will perform anwheres near as good as the Aspencade. What are the weak points compared to the 1200. What to do?

3. The BMW RT has 118 Horse and really handles super well. I know nithere of the Wings will handle like this but I am 66 and want a smoother, softer ride from Pa to California.

4. On both of the Older wings, should I swith to synthetics as soon as possible, also what about the Gas. With all this Ethanol, I am concerned for the seals in the carbs, valves etc.

How about some help here>>> Thanks

Thanks for the info on the Bikes....on the comparison on the 1100 to 1200, would you say the handling is 50% better? I know, hard to say, but just a guess would be fine.

On the Stator, I know some years had problems with the 1200 GL, does anyone know what year, and what will the accessory voltmeter do except tell me when it fail??? or will it give me a clue in advance....

other problems with the bike?, I am also told that there are belt failures and there are cam shaft bearing problems,

Thanks for all the input, If I could find the previous owner of the 1200 than I could find out about the Stator

Surprisingly neither aare oon the road, the 1100, is awaiting the final shock seals and the 1200 a rear brake kit. Soon I can evaulate them myself. I am still painting the GL 1100 by finishing up the stenciling and the sharks mouth and the shocks. About 10 hrs left on the project. 1200 almost ready so this weekend, Out to Long Island on the R1200RT Beemer for a cookout.
