I have had both, the GL1100 and GL1200. When I had my 1100, I told myself that I would never need or want a different bike. Through a sad story, the bike died, and eventually got parted out. But, when I got the 1200, I said WOW, it is just like the 1100, but better in every way. Smoother, faster, etc. And, it still looks like a motorcycle.
As for the oil, I run Castrol GTX 20-50, and have done so for 30+ years in all my motorcycles. Never had an oil related problem. Can't see any reason to spend the extra money for synthetic. Maybe in the Beemer, but not in a motorcycle which was designed to run on Dino oil.
