I think you will be as happy with it as I am Mine. I had a 16 year laps in riding after my kids were born and I bought mine as a starter bike to get back in the swing but I love it. I'd like to get a new bike but hate the idea of giving up my interstate.

Jdot84, that bike of yours looks really cool in that blue, no wonder you are so happy

Even as a confirmed 1500aholic, I have to agree that the 1200 is a fine looking bike. They somehow look purposeful and built to tour.

MoneyGuy, you should go for the bike, especially if you recon the POs have looked after it well.

Needless to say, the bike started tipping and I managed to let it down on the guards very gently. Not wanting him to come out and see my bike laying on its side, I went around to the other side and lifted the bike back on its feet. I thought it would be much harder than it was, but surprisingly, it was relatively easy.

Great comments on two things: 1. The reliability of the 1984 1200 c.c. Gold Wing, and 2. The fact that the Wing can be my every-day bike.

Funny you should mention this. I was over to a buddy's house on Saturday and we went looking for parts for his bike. We took his truck and I put my Aspy in the garage next to his bike. After returning and getting his bike fixed, I went to roll my bike out of the garage (he had went inside to wash up) and the antennas got stuck in his garage door. I held the bars with one hand while trying to get the antennas un-stuck. Needless to say, the bike started tipping and I managed to let it down on the guards very gently. Not wanting him to come out and see my bike laying on its side, I went around to the other side and lifted the bike back on its feet. I thought it would be much harder than it was, but surprisingly, it was relatively easy.

psssst Chris, that knurled nut at the bottom of the antenna lets you lay them down. Don't worry, I wont tell anyone.

Hi,

I've had my '85 Aspencade for 2 years now, and it's never failed to run.

A couple times, once last year and once this year, It acted like it the petcock was shut off. Both times I cranked on more throttle. Then all of a sudden, it got fuel, talk about acceleration !! :shock:

I changed the fuel filter, checked the gas cap. Haven't had the problem in 3,000 miles.

I also keep an eye on the solenoid -battery connections. I would ride it anywhere.

Hi,

Just new to this great website. After a 30 year lay off bought an 85 1200 I in 2001. New stator installed before I puchsed it. Have driven it to Regina and back. No bike problems but my butt complained ....

My bike is basic.....I want to put a stereo system in. Your recommendations plse.

Hi Flyboy:waving:Welcome to the Forum, If you have a stock seat that should be the first thing to replace {{Wedgie Special}}, I do not know about a stereo, other members will fill you in.

Stock seat but no more long hauls planned. Will look for a more comfortable seat.....recommendations welcome...but stereo at the top of my list.

Hey Dean Can you give me an price on the DC or EC harness. Does it help electrical problems? Mine gives me 12 volts when I pull the head light and stop light fuse it goes up to 14 volts. 1987 Asp. Thanks a lotttttttttt.

Flyboy.. (I like that),, The seats on these bikes (1200's) were not improved until 1987, and then, at best, you still needed to get your "iron butt" before making any long trips. I believe Corbin produces the most comfortable seat for the bikes of that vintage. I just took a trip to Wash DC (1100 miles round trip in two days) on my 1200 and believe me, my butt was screaming with pain.

The 1500's were a big improvement, but by today's standards, they were just as tough to mold into for a long ride..

I have not heard one complaint about the 1800 seats.. Seems like Honda got it right finally...

My 85 Aspencade has 122,000 miles on it and purrs like a kitten. Do the electrical hard soldering, both on the stator side and the regulator sideNOW! Change the timing belts NOW!Replace the fusible link with an inline fuse holder. Keep up with the preventative maintenance stuff at regular intervals and this bike will serve you well and for a long time. The GL-1200 series, in my opinion, is the best looking of all the Goldwings. They handle well and can be run hard. They (with the exception of the stator) look to me to be easier to work on than the other vintages too. You won't regret buying this bike if it's been halfway well cared for.

Hey Alski, The EC is $50 and the DC is $25. Some like one some like the other, I have the DC and I like it. Search on this forum for DC Harness or EC haness for info.
