1200 c.c. GoldWing - is it reliable?

I'm a new member. I'm looking at buying a 1984 Wing, 1200 c.c. A friend says the 1200 is probably the worst built GoldWing. Can anyone comment on that for me? It's in great shape - 77,000 km (48,000 miles). Has a trailer also. Can anyone comment on the 1200 Wing form a mechanical point of view? thanks.

When I take a trip I'll probably post on this great site and maybe meet up with someone. We'll maybe do the coast next year. We're talking about it.

BTW, go, Esks. :grinner::jumper:

[Blur]Pssssst... MoneyGuy...All Goldwings are equally fast regardless of color. Redwing is just partial to the red ones...[/Blur]

Yeah, I could tell. :cool:

How can you tell if the wiring trick has been done to your wing? I had a guy pull off my sidecover once, and told me it had been done to mine. And what does this really do to the bike?

Pull off the left sidecover where the battery is. To the forward side of the battery, there will be 3 yellow wires. Now, if it is still factory, the 3 yellow wires will run through a small whitish 3 pin connector. This connector will be right forward of the battery. If it has been modified, the connector will either be gone or the wires will have been cut from it and soldered together.

Here is a picture of a bike that has had the "harness" installed. See the 3 yellow wires? They have been cut out of the plug, soldered together and wrapped with heat shrink.

Just went to the garage and snapped this:

So I guess mine has had this done?

It appears so. Did you pull the wires out to see that they were soldered and shrink wrapped? If it were mine, I would want to check it over to make sure that the job wasn't botched up.

Your "plug is definitly history butI'm curious as to what is tied to the red/black that is hardwired direct to your battery with no fuse in sight????

Looks to me like it might be a quick connect for a battery tender.

Or a plug to plug ina pancake cooker :goofygrin:

I went from an '83 1100i to an '85 1200a after I totalled the '83. I loved the '83 Interstate and wasn't even looking for another bike but when I replaced it with the '85 Aspencade (same deal as yours; I got a matching trailer that travels like a dream!) and while the difference is only 1000 cc's the bike has so much more torque than I had with the '83 and the ride is so much better I'm (almost!) glad I had the accident. (Second thought, no I'm not. Just glad I got the 1200.)

One thing you will find with the 'Wing is that the moment you start to move it balances. It feels like it just "wants" to stay upright. I ride mine in first gear at slow pace quite often and whether one-up or two-up it just feels great.

Also, I too am a self-described motard when it comes to mechanics but the instructions this bunch gives you (when finished discussing deer, pancakes, currants, spam, kilts and ball bearings) can literally walk you through the work with a little patience on your part. You may still decide to take it to a mechanic but get the suggestions from here first.

I'm retarted. Thanks Paul. That is what I meant to type but my fingers wouldn't cooperate.

Maybe it's because I am still stewing over the lid deal. :X
