1200 rear hub and wheel on an 1100?

Ok, by now most of you know I'm getting ready to add a sidecar to my rig.

What I've been looking into is how to run a car tire on the rear and this is what I've found out so far.

Tires made for the older VW bugs will work in the 135/15 size with no clearance issues as my current rear tire is a Dunlop E-3 with a total width of 5.52 inches and most of the VW 135/15 tires are 5.2 inches wide.

So, what I'm looking into is to see if a complete 1200 rear setup including the drive shaft housing and shaft will swap over to a 1100 as the 1200's run a 15 inch tire versus the 16 on the 1100.

I will also probably have to use the 1200 rear brake caliper setup also.

Interesting. Sorry I can't help with answers though?

Are you swapping the whole swingarm assembly?
I haven't looked at the charts but how will the gearing be? and to go with that what year is your 1100 motor/trans/final drive?

Good luck

I don't know yet if I'll have to change out the whole swingarm or not, that's one of the reasons I'm asking. It's an 82 1100 so I do need to check the final drive ratios for the 2 different final drives to see how much difference is there.

first to answer your question... no they will not swap over

secondly to answer the question you did not ask.... a 15" car tire will NOT fit a 1200 15" rim.... the 1200 rim is slightly larger than 15" and so the car tire will not seat properly.... there were 15" "conversion" wheels by eml (I had one, and just sold it.... I got $250 and it was 20 years old it sold quickly so no boubt I did not ask enough

You're right, I don't think you asked enough for it.

I've been in touch by email with a sales rep at Dauntless and they have a used leading lead setup for a 1100 complete with the eml wheels for car tires, front and back. Asking price? $2500. New ones without the wheels are $2800.

all I sold was the rear wheel not the whole set up.... but I told the guy 250 and he popped 280 in my paypal to cover the shipping (within moments... and he was a newbie to naedgoldwings, so didn't even know I was a long timer and stand by my word

unfortunatly the front end (the real gem) had a fateful meeting with a tree
