I have a chance to look at a 85 1200. I am a 1000 1100 guy so I have limited knowledge on he 12's. Anyway I remeber there has been an issue with the stators on the 12's and that when fixed by the dealer they marked the bikes..an "X"??? someplace is that correct and if so where??? Second if it has not been fixed is Honda still honoring that warranty/recall fix?

I am going to see the bike in two hours so time is short to get an answer.

I would be surprised if Honda would still honor the warranty/recall on a 25-year old bike. I did the Poorboy conversion on mine about two years ago and it's still going strong.



A quick way to verify if the stator is charging is to check the voltage across the battery terminals while increasing the RPM to about 3000. The voltage should rise with an increase in RPM (a minimum of 13 volts at 3000 RPM would be a good indication).

I read that many that were 'fixed' still had failure rates so be prepared to do more at so point. The alt conversion is the way to go.

I replaced my 1200s stator in 1997 at 37,000 miles with a Honda warrantied for life stator. The lifetime warrantied stator has ablue colored band around the three stator wires there on the outside at the exit from the rubber plug.


I did replace where the original owner had donme a crude soldering job to bypass a very fried connector in front of the battery and I ran three new 12 ga yellow wires from my new connection up to the reg/rec unit and hardwired that connection. Mine has had no further issues.

I was supposed to meet the guy at 10..he never showed up and hasn't returned my calls..FLAKE?? Or he had accidental??? on the way to meet me..hope not.
