Put a poorboy conversion on it and be done with the charging problems. Search Poorboy and it should bring up several threads on the conversion

man you're very good with tools, there is an external alternator mod. bet thats gonna be easy cake for you...

Could be as easy as a melted stator plug but if not go ahead and do the poor boy. $1200 for an aspy is a great price.

I paid $1000 for my 84 1200 about a year and a half ago..Less than a year later, the stator went out completely. I toyed with the idea of pulling the engine and replacing the stator. But when I looked at the big picture, I decided to go with the poor boy conversion...More juice and if it fails, all I have to do is pull the alternator and have it fixed. I've added a 240 watt stereo amplifier since converting to the poor boy, and I couldn't be happier...My only qualm is that I wish that I could find a belt that would allow me to mount the alternator and not have to modify the side fairing. If I could have found a belt 1/2 inch shorter, I would have been in tall cotton...I searched high and low, and ended up having to bend the fairing..Not that hard to do, but even that could have been avoided with just the right sized belt.

And trust me, I am no wrench, so if I can do it, anyone can do it..Just ask Don..he walked me through with baby steps..

I too did the Poorboy on my 1200 Aspy. I didn't have to do any mods to the lower fairing. As far as I'm concerned it's the only way to go. Plenty of info and knowledge on this forum to get it done.

thanks guys that's what i'll do maybe just the plug want know till i get it. he's willing to meet me halfway so a 3 hr drive is better than a 6 next trike on the way. it is an 86 buy the way and is beautiful. :action:
