There have been several documented Goldwings achieving over 300,000 miles. One I know of has over 500,000 miles.

Lots of them are over 200,000 miles.

Does it have any documentation as to maintenance? Does it appear to be well maintained? If it idles smoothly and pulls easily in 5th gear from 1,000 rpm and accelerates without bucking, it sounds like a good candidate to me.

I've got to go look at it. I just saw it and heard it on video. It appears to be well taken care of. Lots of extras not a junker. I can get it for 5,500 with a new travelcade seat.
Well actually im trading my 1800 for it and a cash difference that equals that.

For 5500 it would have to be very clean and have complete maintenance records. Hopefully single owner? He should have everything including every oil change, tune up, timing belts, etc.etc.etc. 120k is not high at all if the bike has been maintained. I think for a bike that has been properly maintained 200 plus is the norm nowadays. If it has not been taken care of then it may be at the end of it's life. Make him show you the records and take a few minutes to go through them. You are not being rude just protecting your investment.

there is nothing wrong with a 88 with 120,000 miles, mine has 141,414 and I ride it everyday, see the thread about the working Goldwing.

Heres the deal I have an 02 1800 with 23k miles. I lost my job and am looking to downgrade to a 1500 with some cash to get payment off of me.
I got this offer for an 88 with progressive front end upgrade, upgraded to new model headlight. lots of chrome. Clean bike. 119k miles and some change. Offer was $6500 and the 1500 with new travelcade seat for my 1800. Ive seen 1800's go for 10k dollard to 11,500 dollars. so i went with the middle value of 10,750 . 10,750-6500 = 4250 for his bike. How does that sound

I am really not up on 1800 values but I have been watching 1500's some. When you first said 5500 for a 88 with 120k miles to me that seems a bit high. 4250 sounds like it is the right area from what I have been seeing.

If I were contemplating a deal like this I would really look hard at the bikes on Craigs Listin your Stateto get a feel for what the market is doing. Find as many direct comparisons to your bike and the 1500 that you can. That new seat is worth probably 400?? Bottom line, A good deal is one where you are happy. Nobody else really matters;)

Yesteday I looked at two 1500s, a 91 with 77k asking $5k and a 95 with 56k asking $4.5k

I was in the same pickle as you a couple of years ago. I had a very nice gl1200 but, I was NOT doing my own maintenance.

My mechanic is very honest and told me that I needed to get rid of the bike because it was going to hundred dollar me to death every six months to keep it going.

I found a '94 gl1500se who's owner said his wife told him he could not keep it because it was too expensive to have around and not be riding it everyday.

I traded him my 1200 plus $4500 and rode home on his 1500. We both got what we needed. One can argue all day over "was it worth it?"

The bottom line is, will the trade achieve what you need to accomplish?

That said, I think his asking price is a little bit high, but he might argue the same on your bike. For a cash deal, you have to sell your bike first, and then hope to find a 1500 with what's left over.

That's my take on it.

That may be what i do is sell outright, however for the price of 1800 right now it will hurt my feelings more or less. I don't know. I don't want to rush into nething, but i neet to get this done also. Anyone know someone wnating to upgrade to an 1800 and has a 1500 for trade???

Really don't want to rain on anyone's parade...last year I sold a real nice mint 89 1500 with about 60k miles for $2,700 in July, it was decked out like the later year aspys... reverse, cb, rear speakers etc. And it also had a nice backrest.

So imo, 5500 is too high for a 88 1500 with 120k. Peopleprobably pay the 5500 on fleabay or craigslist, but I'm a cheap blagoyevich and I'd wait for a better deal.

Whatever your decision, good luck to you.

Yup that's why I never got back to you re my 1500... you were looking for 6500 on top of my 15... to me that was only 3000-3500 for my 1500 with 1/2 the miles of the one you are looking at sooooooo if you can get this guy to do the deal I would go for it many wings go well over 200k Just change the belts as soon as you get it

Down grading depends on how you see it. I am selling my 1800 for 2 reasons, 1) I prefer riding my 1500, 2) out of a job and I need to sell, see the classifieds

My thoughts exactly. Some people can fall in a pile of crap and come out smelling like a rose every time. Sounds like the guy that got that bike is one of those people
