1500 extended forks

Seems that one of the PO's did a little front end mod to the old girl. Some how he has extended the forks by three inches. I can see where the tubes use to be clamped inbut are stillflush at the top. Are all 1500 forks the same length? Any idea how he accomplished this and how I can put it back to stock? I just don't see where to loose the extra length.:?

Look at the upper triple clamp which is hard to see a lot in there under the tupperware . The extension should be screwed into the top of the fork tube . If it is extended you should be able to see/ feel the joint where the extension fits into the original tube . Check just below the upper clamp area .

The extender may require the use of a spacer to keep the spring in the correct length . If so that would need to be removed .

that's different.......if you do change it , will you please post photos of what they did?

seems to me with a 3" extension it would make the forks weak and possibly bend at tha joint. not to mention the fact that it just looks weird. photos will help other members as to what to do or not to do .

thank you,

Are you sure the forks have been lengthened?
It might be that the center stand has been shortened.
It does look kinda weird though.

the cheap fix would be to disassemble the tubes and add spacers. i've done that to lower a bike...

im 99% sure your wing has extensions, just remove them and you will be back to stock.

I also think someone has added tube extenders. That ought to do nasty things to the bike's handling. If they are tube extenders it's almost certain that there are spacers inside the tubes to extend the effective length of the springs as Motosickle mentioned. Shouldn't be difficult to remove all that junk. Easiest way would be to slip a jack under the front of the bike and jack it up just enough to take the weight off the front wheel. Then loosen the clamping screws on the steering stem or triple tree and lower the jack until the joint in the tubes came flush with the upper clamp. You should be able to do that without removing any tupperware other than the two J shaped pieces next to the handle bars and the bridge over the handlebars which would give more room to work.

Tube extenders? Are these threaded into where the caps thread into? I was going to leave this for a winter project, but that sounds like it may be a simple fix that I may dig into this weekend. Shame on someone for selling them and the other for installing them! Why mess with Mother Honda?

As far as the handling comment- since this is my first wing, I've got nothing to compare it to.Going back to stock may make it feel like I'm riding a ST1100 But once I get it squared away, I'll let you know.

The PO may have added the extension to compensate for sagged springs and to gain back some ground clearance. :?

I'd check to see that the springs are within specs, when you pull the extensions off.

The service limits for the main front fork springare - 390.6mm(15.38") to 382.8mm(15.07")

Are those stock 1500 forks? I have known folks to install a different models front forks to get more travel. Usually they do this as they are planning to ride in some rough terrain. Not sure why you would do that on a Wing though :)Did the bike go to Alaska? :)

Problem solved. They are original forks with 3" extensions. Not sure where the PO got them or why, but....

Honda wanted $45 per side plus cap and O ring. Plus they had to order them. I needed to try out the new ride so I dropped by the local wielding shop. They cut them down for me and filled the hole. Put them back on and the bike is back to normal.

The bike handles completely different, kinda like a sport bike now. I learned quickly that when you drop the front end 3" compared to what your used to, you can drag the floor boards much easier!

The new sports bike.

And now I don't have to cut down my windshield this winter, I can see over it now.:)

You say they filled the hole ? So you have no place to install the air fitting ? Usually there is a Schrader valve air port in the cap . Perhaps you wont need the air assist.

Good job .

As far as I know, the 88's didn't have the air on the front. It was a threaded hex head plug in the top, which I think allowed you to fill the oil without removing the cap.

There was one downside to this. I thought I had one of those deluxe ride off center stands. With the front end that high, it was just an illusion:(

now thats a wing:shock:and thank you for the photos, never seen 3" extensions before.

and if you are looking for a ride off stand, contact member dgreen. he has one he'll part with.
