I have an 88 1500 that hesitates off idle. Honda says the service bulliten work was done although the frame was not marked. I saw a post suggesting raising the idle speed. I went to investigate the speed adjuster and noticed a nipple near the fuel petcock that was open, and I checked with a vacuum gage, was drawing air in.

What is the function of this nipple, and should it be capped? I will cap it and ride it to see if it cures the problem, although nothing could be so easy.

hi jim when you say nipple is it like a brake bleeding nipple iam just wondering if this is off the air filter witch has a small 1 way T peice about 3inches ahead of the petcock it may have got misplaced when some one changed the filter if its drawing air it can make the idle a bit off that could cause the hesation

Sounds to me like the vacuum line for the fuel shutoff valve.

If it is, it goes straight to your right side carb and would be a huge leak causing a large imbalance between the carbs.

Which would give you a really crappy idle at the least.
