1500 not shifting into 3rd gear

Has anyone ever heard of a 1500 not able to shift into 3rd gear and what would be a possible cause. I was thinking that the bike might just need a good service ie drain and replace the oil. Any other suggestions???? This is a friends bike and he says he just can't get it to shift into 3rd. I never heard of such a problem, if it was a clutch problem he'd have problems with any gear and if it was a transmission problemI think it would be making unusual noises in other gears or would be difficult shifting in other gears. He did not say it would pop out of 3rdhe just can't shift into 3rd.:?:?

Hi Dave. ask him if he can catch 4th & 5th. if it will not go farther than 2nd, He could have an internal fork issue. if he is running a heel toe shifter, that might be an issue. If his shifter is contacting any part of the bike, that will also cause this.
More info would help!

I don't know if the gl1500 has a shifter mechanism inside the front engine cover, but that same thing happened my gl1100 and it was a matter of pulling the front cover and replacing a bent part. This was less work than splitting the engine, maybe thats all you will need to do on your gl1500.

Hatchetman,

Yes, it shifts into all other gears. Thank you so much for your inputs.

Does it make any noise at all when trying to shift to 3rd?

if she sifts into third gear, but she feels like its in neutral, then you probably have a broken gear in there.

William_86 Thanks, I thought of that, but to me it feels just like it is hard to shift. I'm going to help him change the oil this weekend and let him ride it to check it out. The linkage all looks good.

Update and good news:)

Well I finally got to change the oil. It was pretty dark when draining it. I added new oil and some seafoam, started it and got it warmed up drained it and it looked slightly discolored so went through the refill along with seafoam and we went for a ride. My buddy said he couldn't believe the difference it started shifting better than it ever had and he was able to use all gears. We rode a total of 150 miles and got back home. I went ahead and changed the oil and filter again to make sure we got all the crud out. It may seem like an overkill, but the oil is clean now and he is very happy with the way it shifts. I found out he hasn't changed the oil since he had it for a year and he didn't know when the previous owner had it serviced last. He know knows that good servicing practices are important. I told him over the winter we will go through it again and change the belts just because he has no idea when or if they have been changed. Another happy winger!!!

Thanks AZGL1500,

I was hoping that was all that was wrong with the bike. I just couldn't understand how it would not shift into 3rd, but would shift okay into the other gears. It felt likeit was harder to shift than mine in all the rest of the gears, but when I saw how dirty his oil was I had some hope right then. This site is REALLY HELPFUL. I cant stress enough for newbies to read and research this site for any problems they are having even if not identicalsymptoms anything close may cure it.

So now you gotta get your wingin' buddy to join this site so we can help you monitor his servicing!:2finger::clapper:
