Dirty Headset/speaker switch. :?
imported post

the headset icon on the dash goes out when you hit the switch. so to me that means the switch is working but no sound from bike speakers. and it did work a day ago. i think i'll beat on it and see if that will work. something probably is just dirty.

If it has an after market Amp check for power to it.
My 88 has an after market installed and I had the same type problem 2X. One was a loose wire on an extra fuse block which powered the amp when I finally located it I could move wires, wiggle and jiggle and the radio would work for awhile then quit again. I fixed it.

The other time it was a wire at the amp. Got pulled loose when something bumped it probably.

Both times the radio worked fine, just no speaker sound.

Have you tested the 5 amp fuse in the relay box marked "backup"?
imported post

have looked and can't find any relays or a fuse that says back up???? anybody know where they are i have a diagram but it doesn't tell me where they are.

and again i'm getting sound from the headsets just nothing from the bike speakers.

shameless bump

There are two 5A fuses in the relay box. Test them with a multimeter.
imported post

i only have one in the relay box and it doesn't have anything to do with the sound system but it's good. 9 10 12 are good.

i also have no current to my left rear tail light if this means anything.

It is the #9 fuse marked "Back Up". Make sure you have 12V at this fuse.
imported post

yes i do.
the radio plays through the headphone just not the bike speakers.

still no radio through the bike speakers? anybody else. it all works fine on the headsets just nothing through the bikes speakers.

Maybe the speakers are blown or the amp?

Does your '88 have rear speakers installed?

If so, I would suspect that somethign has disturbed an aftermarket fader that was in poor condition (or maybe anonther connector left unplugged?)
imported post

does have rear speakers. well it did work the day i brought it home. i remember muting it but it came back but the next day i had nothing. going to call the radio guru today may send it off. i keep hearing amp is this built into the radio?
imported post

i also remember the trouble started when i was messing with the headsets???

The final output amp for your '88 are internal to the radio, and run on the 12V provided through that #9 fuse (on the '88 - later years move this fuse into the relay box). You radio's output is 2-channels (stereo) in 4-wires -- these wires are in the largest of the 4-plugs in the back of the radio (3 plugs if you're not counting the antenna) - the speaker output wires are kinda in the center of the plug - so they don't often come loose,, - but pushing the plug back in never hurts - wiggle the harness as you do (radio on / speakers output med/low vol) to see if you hear something as you wiggle- Wires do break, but you'd need to have broken two to kill 2-chanels of output...(assuming you had 2 to begin with)

The '88 didn't ship with rear speakers, so you've got some aftermarket addition to address those. Every "kit" for adding these speaker would have a fader of some sort as part of the kit.

If you've got covers off - there's 3-connectors involved for the rear speakers - all are above and forward of the reverse lever...

If you don't have the left-inner fairing off, look around for a strange knob -- often just the shaft of a potentiometer, and most that I've seen came with a horrid brushed-aluminum maybe 5/8" diameter knob. Since the mounting of these was left up to the customer, they can be anywhere - The key surround panel is common, as is the left pocket (or just setting the thing to some value and wadding-up the harness and stuffing it somewhere).

If you discussion of "messing with the headsets" was in/around the driver's headset pigtail, you'd'a been in and around (and possibly under) the left pocket where things could be squished and/or disturbed...

I would strongly recommend hunting for the fader harness - most are fragile and of poor quality, and one good tug or push can change them from working to INOP in about a second. This photo shows the stereotypical fader control bit on the right (see the knob) - many MANY are like this (wires in a smooth tube and not an OEM loking flex shield or tape wrap):

got it.... the rear speaker plug to the fader had been routed very tightly under some hoses. i guess me putting it up on the center stand had pulled the plug loose. thanks much guys all working again i actually called wayne about 30 min ago and he also said it had to be the fader or radio. great picture satan and it's just like what i have. thanks for not giving up on me.

If you're gonna roll, you deserve to rock!

Pesky bit, those faders. Glad your audio is back
