Having got the ignition pulsars from Canada(we are in UK) the engine now runs but we need to know how the reverse is supposed to work.
With the alloy controller under the saddle(4 way red connector) not connected the bike makes one movement every time you press the starter button, with it connected the bike makes 3 movements then you have to disengage the reverse lever and re engage to get another 3 movements.
Q is this how its supposed to work?
If not what is likely to be wrong?
The 1500 is not common in UK and information not easy to come by.

Thanks in advance for your help

Does that mean you can press the button 3 times and get movement but not a 4th? And is that a short movement or is it continuous until you release the button? It should move continuously while the button is pushed.

First answer Dave's question above.
As you probably already realize the reverse system id fairly complex with a lot of safety built in. Judging by what you describe most have found the issue right where you are. Under the saddle tis the starter regulator relay. If it fails or poor connection etc. the bike could display the symptoms you describe.
The test for the starter regulator relay is pretty straight forward and attached below. Hope it helps. 2020-03-19 (4).png

The bike does not move smoothly, the starter seems to herumf if that makes sense, once every time starter button depressed if relay disconnected and 3 times with relay connected and button held down. Then has to be taken out of reverse and re engaged to get another 3 herumfs

If not relay regulator, might also be the speed limiter fuse (Dogbone type, 65 amp under seat) or reverse fuses. (Blade type 5 amp just above battery area) See attached.

My 91 was acting up in reverse recently. Pushing the button, it would back up few inches and stop-push again same-pull reverse lever up and down same ordeal. I took the starter switch apart to find a gritty mess on the contacts and after cleaning, my problem was solved.
