Need input. My father rides a 2000 1500. The other day while he was riding in our great state of Maryland, his bike just quit. We jummped it and it started right away. We took a reading and it showed 11 volts. We rode a few miles and again it quit. We got it home by a deep cell boat battery attached to the rear seat. When we got home we tested again, while running 11 volts. While engine not running 11 volts.

That sounds like the charging system is not working. I would look at the alternator first.

Probably the brushes in the alternator are either stick or worn or both. Same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago and it was just the brushes were worn out (and stuck!).

New brushes from the dealer are about $8 for the pair. The alternator is easy to R&R. The only trick is the brush connectionsneed to be soldered on.

The Compufire is a great alternator but not cheap. Your call.

Alternator not putting out...........! Many 1997 - 2000 Gold Wing's had alternator problems. It is usually (not necessarily always) an open circuit in the rotor windings.

First do this test, tap on the alternator (not excessively hard), if the brushes are hung up it might break them loose, see if it starts charging. If so, remove disassemble and clean/replace brushes.

Remove the alternator, disassemble, check for resistance between the slip rings. There should be 2.9 - 4.0 ohms resistance. There should be no continuity between the slip rings and the rotor shaft. If this test fails, you have a bad rotor.

Also check the brushes, they might be hung up in the brush holders (not touching the slip rings). Or could be worn out.
