My 881500 just picked up a problem. Very rough idle sounding almost like a lawnmower engine until I get to ~ 2800 rpm then it seems to pick up fine.

Figuring bad gas I replaced the fule filter and put in I put in a fule dryer. No help

I then stripped down to the carbs (airfilter fine) spraid the carbs heavly with carb cleaner. No Help

Pulled all the plugs they all looked fine other than one, cleaned that cleacked the gap on all and replaced. Little help

Threw in a can of Seafoam ran ~ 20 miles no real help but it is harder to start

Any leads?

Thanks

:waving:Hello and Welcome .

My wings are still a bit wet on the 1500 . But after what you already have done , I might begin by looking at the vacuum hoses . I dont think its a 20 min project , cause you need to get inside the tupperware

I wish you success and hope its a simple problem . Get her back running well and meet us in Montrose in September ....this link

Just finished rereading your post . I thought you had already cleaned the carbs . I now suspect you have plugged up low speed circuit in at least one carb . I would take them off for a thorough cleaning.

. . . was the "non-fine" plug the middle one on the right side ??

first thing I would do is to throw out those spark plugs and replace them with NEW ones. You can't tell if they're bad by looking at them and besides new ones are fairly cheap.

Good luck

No the dirtier plug was the closest tomy foot on the left side. and I always thought you could read your future by reading your plugs

i would go with the new plugs to. if one dos'nt have good spark it will show up at low r.p.m.s and lass noticeable as rpm picks up as you go past the bad plug faster. as for the sea foam, 20 miles is'nt enough. it could thak 2 or 3 tanks to clear it out. [ it took me 2 tanks]

good luck.

Sometimes you can. The vacuum source for the automatic fuel petcock is a nipple tappedinto thecenter intake runner on the right bank.

If the 20-year-old rubber diaphragm in the petcock goes bad, the vacuum will pull raw fuel into that intake runner - and that cylinder will go crazy rich.

Middle right plug black = bad auto. petcock diaphragm. The over-rich condition can also kill low rpm performance, and affect starting.

Have you checked for a spark at all the plugs, you don't mention if you did. If a coil went down she will still start and run rough, getting smoother as the revs get higher.

Thanks all. I will do the no brainers first. Check the spark, replace the plugs, then if there is no improvement I will check the rubber diaphragm in the petcock and finally pull the carbs.
Thanks

Just to seal the post: I changed the plugs, oil/ and filter it was still a bit rough but much better, so I threw in another can of seafoam and took it for a spin around the block (250 miles) and she is as good as new
Thanks for everyone's help

Another endorsement for that "salt water froath"
