Starting my 1800 sometimes I have to release the clutch, then re-engage with it in gear in order to start, then sometimes I just have to put it in neutral. Has anyone else experienced this?

Never had that problem as I always start the bike in neutral. On cold mornings you make hard work for it when starting in gear.
If you changed levers then the switches may be out of adjustment.
That is the clutch switch. Either it is defective or your levers are not properly operating the plunger on the switch. (the top clutch switch, the one looped into the safety circuit)
If you have the chrome aftermarket adjustable levers try them on setting 4 or 5.
Sometime you have to loosen the mounting screw and move the switch just a bit.
Also worn bushings in the levers will cause this.
