Just had my carbs rebuilt by Bear Cycle, starts and runs great, until hot, then starts missing and backfiring. Must be ignition, right? What do I replace, the coils? It’s got the originals and points that I’ve checked and set, valves too. If I go with Dyna replacement coils from Randakk, and buy two, do I need the ballast resistor that is on the old coils?

just a SWAG,
but the coils are probably cracked, and when they get hot, the cracks open up and the spark jumps to Ground.
DaveO430 uses GL1500 coils, cheap and they work.

Gretings,
On my 76 I run with Dyna coils, ignition paired with Accell 8 or 9 mm wires. Once dialed in she runs fantastic.

Ive used the same setup in my old 78 wing to great effect.

Ballasts are not needed with the Dyna setup.

The happy ending to this thread is I mounted the Dynatek coils which fit the original coils bracket perfectly, and I DID use the original ballast resistor. There wasn’t room to Mount it on the bracket with the new coils so I ran the bracket bolt through just one end of the resistor frame. Seems strong enough. With great hope, I cranked the bike, no sputtering, nothing. Argh!! Then I remembered that the two coils each serve two spark plugs (1 & 3, 2 & 4), so I swapped wires, hit the button, and VAROOM, she cranked up like a bride on her wedding night! And with the new coils and plug wires, no mis firing at all, smooth acceleration, and thanks to Bear’s Cycle, it also idles like it should. Happy happy!
