Buy some bulk O-ring cord from Mc Master Carr and a tube of super glue. Or cut larger ones down from hardware store stock. Get Buna 70 0r 90 stock (most any black O-ring is Buna). Cut the cord square with razor blade and deburr, then a thin dab of super glue on one end and set together. The joint properly done is stronger than the cord. Proper interference on an O-ring is 0.005" so you can gauge whether a certain non-Metric size will work. too much interference and the cord will extrude in the gap.
