1982 GL1100 Interstate won't start

293 Views 14 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  DaveO430
I have just installed a new set of coils, spark plugs and cables on this bike, which had not been touched since before Covid. It has a brand new battery in it (AGM).

The starter turns the engine over well, and it coughs and fires a couple times, but does not catch and start to idle. It feels to me as if it's not getting gas. Not sure what the next step should be. Any and all suggestions will be welcomed.

Thanks.

I would guess it's a good chance the carbs are gummed up. Try squirting a little gas in the plenum. If it starts but doesn't keep running that is the problem.
Spark is there, air is there, the only thing remaining is gas.

You can grasp at straws and remove the fuel feed line from the carbs, turn the engine over and see if the pump/filter feeds gas correctly.

If they do im pretty sure that its time to deal with what i guess you actually know, but dont want to; stripping and cleaning out the carbs.

And compression.

Sorry I have taken so long to reply to your latest posts. Been having trouble with posting on the forum, but John Craig got me squared away this afternoon. The next thing I'm going to do is check the connections to the plug for the new coils, and I'll let you know what happens.

QUESTION: With the new coils, if I had the spark plug cables attached to the wrong plugs, what would happen when it turned over? Would it be obvious?

Thanks.

Depending on where they are it will do nothing or backfire. A picture of how you have it set up would help.
Thanks, Dave. I'll get a picture this afternoon

Here's how I have the coils wired:

OLD PLUG NEW PLUG

blk to blk
yel to yel
blu to gray w/red stripe

That tells me nothing. The black wire should go to the center terminal, the yellow to the front terminal, the blue to the rear.

On the bottom of the page you will see a paper clip. Click on that and go to your desktop and attach the photo. Click on the little down arrow next paper clip and attach.

Or you can just drag and drop the photo to the message composition area.
OK, thanks. That's exactly how it's wired. And I did get a spark on all four plugs.

Or click the photo image to the left of the camera and choose the photo, click it, click open and it attaches.
