So the clutch is out now and I am looking at another nut holding the outer drum in place on the shaft. It seems to have notches also. Is there a tool for this nut. I did try to tap it out with a slotted driver to no avail. Or can the casings just be split and leave the basket in place.

Thanks

There is no second nut in the clutch basket, should be a retaining ring. What you are confusing for a second nut is the splined end of the shaft. You need to take the basket off so you can remove the oil pump drive chain to split the case.

How right you are, the retaining ring was the key to the whole operation. Did not see a reference to the "retaining ring" in the Clymer book.
Thanks very much, next step... Split those sucker apart..
