1983 goldwing suspension problems

Quick question for all my goldwing brothers and sisters out there. Just bought a 1983 goldwing had to replace a few things. Fork seals, break pads, throttle cables, and rebuilding carbs. Bike was in mint shape except for these few things. Now it purrs like a kitten but I'm still having a few problems with the air suspension. Originally I chalked it up to the leaky fork seals for not filling up with air. After the seals I still can't fill up the suspension. It only reads 1 bar. Am I being impatient does it take a long time for the motor to fill it up? I can hear the motor come on but it doesn't fill up.

Its amazing in my area all the shops refused to work on the bike b/c of the age so I had to do everything myself.

I've always been a sportbike nut but I'm now hooked on this goldwing neverknew how much fun they are.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey brother..glad to hear that you Love the Wing. I had an 83 standard before and loved it. About your front air suspension. There should be valve stem cap either on the left or right side of triple tree. You can fill it manually...must use a low pressure pump, like bicycle or some type of hand pump.

Hey Bic1Tom,

First, welcome to the forums. This place will teach you all about your new to you Wing. They certainly are wonderful machines. You should add the year of your bike to your profile too.

Does your rear shocks keep air?

To aid in trouble shooting, mix up a strong solution of dish soap and water and gently apply it to the air hose joints with a paint brush while running your compressor. Any bubbling there will show you where you have a leak. Most of those joints have o-rings in them.

Tim.

To Lieutenant and Mr Magic Fingers thank you for your replies. I can see this is a great site with people who are glad to offer suggestions and info.

The back was holding air when I first brought it home. I was sitting on the bike in the driveway like a little kid playing with the gadgets and I hit the button to let out the air and thats when my problems started.

I'm a little curious as to how long they take to fill. I was reading in the manuel and it stated not to run the compressor to long or you will burn it out. The motor sounds similar to one of the ones you buy to fill up your car tire that plugs into the lighter outlet and that usually takes a while to fill up a tire.

I'm also gonna try the soapy water trick though. I wanted to go out to the garage now and the wifey looked at me like I was nuts.lol

Thanks once again guys for your help.

:waving:Welcome to the World's Greatest Goldwing Site bic1tom! :waving:

It could be one of the valves on the selector switch leaking or not closing. I've found a couple of 1100s that had leaks in that area. They are pretty simple and can be cleaned.

Just in case you don't have a manual:

A. The tranny must be in neutral,

B. Depress the buttom that causes the fill indicator to appear for the rear, I think its the button on the bottom right,

C. Then depress the button on the top left andyou should hear the compressor begin to run,

D. It should take about a minute for the indicator to go to the minimum mark on the guage.

If the gauge doesn't move off of one bar after a minute then the compressor system needs to be serviced. The Honda manual has pretty through procedure for this. If you don't have a manual send me a PM and I'll scan the pages and send them.

The manual says that the compressor should not be run continoulsy for more than five minutes. If you look around it you will also find a fitting to attach a tire fill hose to the compressor. AsIrecall it will work when you turn the bars all the way to the left. I've been meaning to get a hose for about 3 years now but never got around to it.

LOL!!! :readit:

My brothers release valve sticks after each winter.. Try taking the cover off of the switches and squirting some break clean on switches ie valves while rapidly pusshing the release valve several times.. then try filling shocks again.. Hal

:cheesygrin::cheesygrin::cheesygrin::cheesygrin::cheesygrin::cheesygrin::cheesygrin::cheesygrin:

YIPPY.......

Thanks to all my brothers and sisters out there with the great suggetions.....

I finally got the suspension to work..... Seems like the valves on the switch to let the air out was stuck open......

I feel like such a mo mo....... Something so simple......

The reason why I was hearing the air come out was because the valve was stuck in the open position.....

The hardest part of this fix is when my son came into the garage and scared me being a little wise guy and I dropped all the bolts in my hands......

Took 5 minutes to fix and a hour to find the bolts....
