1985 GL-1200A Carb Rebuild

I need to remove my carbs to rebuild them. I have all of the lower fairings off of my bike. I also have the air box off of the top. I can see the carbs but cannot get them to release from the intake boots. I can't see anything on top that is limiting them. Is there some trick? Do I have to remove the intakes? Any advice would be much appreciated. I am ready to get this old cadillac cruising again.

Welcome RookieWinger! You'll need to take the bolts out of the intake pipes at the heads and then you can swivel them up to give you some room. Pull the hoses up from the head with the fittings too. The water pipes need to come off too so make sure you have your radiator drained. They are in with o-rings so just pull them out. Fuel line off, throttle unhooked and you should be able to pull them out the left side with some twisting. Pull them out a little and unhook the choke cable under the front left side. There is not a lot of room so try to hold up the hosed and fittings under the carbs so they don't catch on everything coming out. It's not hard to do. Make sure you get all new water pipe and intake o-rings when you rebuild. Paul

Thanks guys. I am going to give it a try today. Will I need any extra gaskets/o-rings than what comes standard in a carb kit because I am taking the intakes loose?

I think all you will need is the o-rings for the intake pipes. It wouldn't hurt to put in a new fuel and airfilter when you have the carbs out.

Okay. This isn't my first ever carb rebuild but it is starting to feel like it. I can't seem to locate where all of the small o-ring are in this dang carb. I took it apart, at least I thought I completely disassembled it with the exception of the choke, because I could not get the connector seperated from the choke plunger. But, much to my surprise, I did not find any o-rings except for the float bowl. I removed carbs, took one apart. Removed float bowl, top cover, took out jets, float valve, air screw, basically everthing that unscrews. WHAT am I OVERLOOKING?

Can I find a parts explosion somewhere?

Thanks a million tricky! I did not think about them being used for the cross-tubes. What a dummy I am. I must have been getting over heated and impatient. This gulf coast heat wave is getting to me.

Send some heat up this way, we can handle a little.

Hope your rebuild goes well.

Any advice on where to get a manual? I would love to have one this weekend and there is no way to order one so I can get things together and free my shop back up.

Thanks gentlemen for all of the help and I wish I could send some heat up your way. We have been having plenty to go around for this time of year.
