I'm trying to resurrect an 85 that has been parked for years. I took off the carbs, removed the float bowl covers, cleaned them up, but did not replace parts. Got them back on the motor, and the engine started up ok. I am getting a steady drip of gas out of the air vent joint pipe on the left side carbs. Do I have a float valve that is not sealing shut?

Yes you hit the nail on teh head. maybe you installed something incorrectly.
Mine did the same after a clean of the carbs and I took them off again and noticed the float stuck open in one of the carbs.
make sure your float valves move freely. You say its been parked for a few years. Mine where on the bike sitting in the same spot for 3 years and the valves had to be removed with needle nose pliers. They were varnished in place.
