1985 GL1200 Limited speed limit or where does it end?

Does the digital readout have a stop to it, only go so high, does the bike have a limiter on its top speed?

My old van had a speedo that went to 85, but went way past that a few times.

My 96 Ranger 4cyl stopped climbing at I think 92 or 93 mph. It just kinda sputtered, and refused to go faster Will the wing do that? I had a 841200i that went 100 once and then I backed off when I saw that. And my wife jabbed me.

This is just a question, I won't try it or don't you try it. I just want to know.

whats the max it has read to you?, just curious :p my interstate has dial gauges and never been past 180km

My '86 Aspy has the digital gauges. Biggest number I've seen is 123 mph.

There's more in it, but not much. :)

I recently had a 85 LTD at 100mph. (uhhh. I was uhhhh.. testing it.... yeah).

I've never gone for WOT to see where it ended.

My '86 Se-i has the digital gauges too. It's really just a tricked up Aspy. I've had mine up to about 126 if I remember rightly. No limiter that I know of. Well, except my common sense, of course. And that gauge is definately faulty at times. :dude:

my speedo goes to 140, I've been to 120- and the tach says theres plenty left, but it was really pretty wimpy at that speed. Lot of wind resistance maybe, but certainly no governor.

Don't want to go that fast on my wing.......:realshocked:

If I had want to go that fast I would have bought a zoomsplat....:D

My wing has the 80mph speedo on it and I wonder what would happen if you went over 80mph???? Is if going to do damage to my speedo???

My '80 750F had one of those 85mph speedos. I could bury it in third gear. Went from Cortez, CO to Portland, OR with the needle pegged and the speedo still worked. However, around 30k miles the guage started fluttering. It lasted a couple more years and still worked when I traded it for the 'Wing. (about 50k)

Incidently, those speedos are far more accurate than the other type. It was mandated that they had to be.

Now to the subject at hand. My 'Wing doesn't have the legs that F had, but I did have it up to a buck & a quarter when it was much newer. My speedo is off 3mph at 60 so that was probably less than 120. It starts running out of steam now at about 115. It still jumps the ton in a heartbeat though.

Can't remember offhand if your bike is injected...if so then there might be a cutoff built in.

My '84 1200 Interstate had no limiter and had no problem swinging past the 120 mark with plenty more left.
Technically - that bikes speedo is marked to read up to the 150MPH. I can't swear to it as I had better things to pay attention to at the time....but I'm guessing around 135 is probably all the faster I ever rode that one and that wasn't flat out.

100 on mine, the little flashing lights in the rear view mirror are a hell of a limiter:cheeky1::cheeky1::cheeky1::action::waving:

did 155 km but the little honda civic in front of me was blocking.imagine that !!! im pushing a civic with a goldwing ....lol
the young guy in the car put his cap straight in front and he had brown smoke coming out of his exhaust

I'm not sure I should say this for many reasons but mostly because speed kills..My 86 Interstate tops out at 134 mph.. Was checked by a police certafied speedometer. Its alot to hold on to at that speed..Thats a completely stock bike..I never looked to see what my speedometer said to much happening really fast..Now I just cruise around at 70 or so...But I found no governer on that run..

Oh ..... really. . . . I'm sure that was expensive ticket.

my 84 has a shimmy at 110, And I stopped due to fear of pain!!! I love that at 90 she still has enough to pass a car pretty quick. I know because the honda civic that was upset that I cut him off was swaying to me and I looked at him and WOT and BYE BYE. Funny thing is my bike was quieter than his car.

To answer your question about how high the speedometer will read I hunted down a thread over at Vic's that has video of a 1985 Limited Edition that's on a dyno. Here's a link to the video:

you guys are nuts.
I regularly race motorcycles past 180mph and I would never take the GL1200 over 100mph. I'd be scared stiff!

Actually Kevin, the GL12 is very stable at speed. As far as "nuts" goes...I gave up "sanity" as a way of life a long time ago. With no regrets.:cooldevil:
