1985 LTD Vapor Locking?

I have an 85 LTD that I have had a problem with since I got it. It seems that it vapor locks. Today I rode it for 30 Minutes stopped at a parts store got on it rode to the office stopped and went to get back on it and it would not start. It would sputter and backfire then die. I let it set for an hour, went out and started it and got 3 -4 miles and it did it again. let it set for half hour got 30 blocks etc etc etc until I finally made it home. I have had it in the shop for this problem before and put in new pulde generators, coils, different computer replace the tilt switch. Got laughed at by couple of mechanics who turned around the minute they saw the bike etc . I get it out of the shop runs fine for couple months and happens again. The other odd thing I noticed is that on the way to the store the volts were the normal 13 - 14. But when it did run the few blocks / miles it was at 12. Do the ltds vapor lock? Is there a simple cure? any suggestions??

Thanks for everything,

Jack

Check the computer under the trunk for code lights and reference the troubleshooting section of the manual. Some one should be along shortly to help.

next time this happens try taking the fuel cap loose, many posts of such problems caused by blocked cap vent:action::waving:good luck

No such thing as vapor locking for over 20 years especially with fuel injection. Your fuel pump is probably bad.

dave0430 are you saying there is not a vent on injected models? don't know all about the bikes, but all other fuel systems i have been involved with have a vent of some sort, and blockage of the vents can cause the fuel pump to run less effective. agree with vapor lock statement, although vent blockage could imitate vapor lock, and worth checking prior to fuel pump change.:action::waving:

What do you think of elect. fuel pumps?

plainmech, I'm not saying it can't be the vent but more likely the fuel pump.
CALEBNDAD, I like electric fuel pumps if the vehicle came with one as in the 1200LTD.
