Just fixed the same problem on an 86 1200A. My problem wasa 1/4 spade terminal on the prlimary side of the left coil. It has simply slipped off and was barely making contact. I'd go ride and5-10 miles from the house it would bog down. I thought it was fuel at first, but when I got back home I checked the exhaust pipes and the two back pipes were cold.
The coils are mounted under the false tank. Had to remove the false tank and air filter box an the"rubber" flaps around the top of the fairing to get my hands in there.Icleaned up theconnector squeezed it closed a little and slipped it back on. I've put about 50mi on since with no problems.
If that is not it, you can check the primary and secondary coils with a meter.
