I have been rebuilding my 86 GL1200A. I had the carbs rebuilt at shop and was started and running wuth an IV to the carbs. I had a rust problem with tank and since have cleaned all out and ran gas from tank until all clear. Problem is that when I hook to gas line and try to start the gas doesn't flow. Should the fuel pump come on when key is on? If I run test leads directly from the battery to the fuel pump shouldn't it come on? When I did it nothing happened. I figured I would do a direct test to the pump before going to the relay.

You have to short the fuel pump relay and measure the flow from the pump. On my '87, the relay is under the coils. Not sure on yours.

You tried running the fuel pump directly from the battery and it didn't run then it's toasted.
