I recently purchased a 1987 GL1200 Interstate and the radio and bracket were missing. I bought the Panasonic radio and bracket on Ebay but it seems as though the bracket will not just bolt into the fairing without some drilling of holes etc. Is this normal, or am I missing something on the mounting procedure for the radio?

Welcome to the forum, Chuck.
Most aftermarket radio mounting stuff will require that you compromise the dash housing. However, that's a fairly flimsy bit and cutting and drilling on it won't adversly affect the strength of the fairing.
If you are clever and careful, you can get a very short, light weight radio and produce your own face plate to mount it.
