Honda changed the clutch pack in 1990 I assume because the old style was week. Is it possible to put a later model clutch pack in an 1988 1500?

Yes indeed! No problems at all with this, the clutch slave cylinder doesn't need replacing as the replacement parts are limited to the clutch kit.

Ben is right. The issue was with the clutch plate that sometimes cracked. A new kit sorted it for good.
