1989 GL1500 Fuse and Body Assembly questions.

A new to me 1989 GL1500 followed me home the other day and I am going through some basic maintenance checks to get familiar with where things are at, etc.

Looking at a 755 page PDF manual and online parts fiches. I am finding there are some unique names such as 'shelter' to refer to the faux fuel tank, or parts fiche categories that aren't intuitively named or include things that don't seem to fit. This has stymied some of my search attempts.

I have a few basic questions:

- What do the fusible box and two 5A fuses on top of the fuel tank control?

- Tips to more gracefully R&R the Top Cover 'Rhino Beetle' horns around the handlebars?

- My ACC Terminal is missing the cover and I need a part number. Which parts fiche section do I find this under?

- Are both screws at the top of the ACC Terminal supposed to be hot with the key on?

I don't recall anything like that on top of fuel tank. I seem to recall that there were some hidden fuses to the left of the battery, tucked in but honestly don't remember what they were there for. Maybe cruise control or reverse??? Hopefully one of the experts will come along and be able to answer that.

I don't recall using any special technique, I believe I just pulled up from front near center to pop it off. To put it back on, I would start on one side pushing on and then get the other side on. The tabs do get weak if you do this a lot and will start to bend making it harder for it to hold. It's a discontinued part but I saw several on eBay that are in decent shape like this one

Part # is 38205-MN5-000 but looks like its discontinued and with the age of your wing, you will find that with many of the parts. I have seen a few used ones in ebay like this

One is a "+" and one "-" and yes, they should be working when ignition is on but dead when key is turned off. But be careful about wiring anything up to that as it uses only a 5amp fuse. It's best to use items that draw very little power or for wiring up the trigger of a relay if you want something that uses more power.

I have located all of that. I think the two 5A fuses are the reverse fuses, just routed up behind the fuel tank.

I rerouted them under the right side panel behind the battery.

There's still that 2nd fusible link that I don't know the purpose for.

This is it - at the top rear of the fuel tank.

Read post #9 in an unrelated thread. Looks like it's for reverse speed limiter and is supposed to have power all the time.

Cool. Now to determine what the 2nd Fuse (looks like the dog bone fuse by the battery) at the top rear of the fuel tank is for.
Reverse speed limiter. Read the link above

"(BTW, Fuse under the seat is your reverse speed limiter fuse - handy emergency spare for the man dogbone if you find yourself stranded...) This fuse should also have 12V full time, regardless of key position."

He calls it a fuse but says it can substitute for main dogbone fuse so he is talking about that fusible link.

That fuse is in the ground circuit, it should not have any voltage.
Hmmm. Any idea of what it is for then?

Ok, I just found another post in a thread and it also references that it's tied into the reverse system and is a 65amp dogbone

OK I think I have made sense of it now: That dogbone assembly behind the top of the gas tank is for the reverse system.

Hope 'fusible link' didn't muddy the question - I'm just used to calling it that back from my restaurant extinguishing system inspection days way back when. Seems 'dogbone' is the common name. Still learning the 'language' of the Goldwing dialect!

Thanks all for your help.
