I am looking at a '90 Apencade with 136,000 miles on it. Have seen pics so far, looks nice. It is an old friend selling it.
Should I be nervous about that many miles. What are some of the things I should be looking for.
Thanx

136k is not high milage for a wing! That said, as for any vehicle of that vintage, you must deal with normal wear and tear, and especially aging.

I'd verify that the following major items were attended to around 100k:
-Changed timing belts and tensioners
-Inspect play (drive line slack) in rear wheel hub... the rubber dameners are pretty worn by then.
-Remove and inspect drive shaft, inspecting splines for wear, proper lubrication.
-Inspect rubber boots to driveline, and rear shocks
-Inspect clutch slave cylinder

And then the typical stuff:
-If stock Honda alternator, then verify that it has been serviced in past 20k miles (eg Brushes and bearings ok)
-Change all fluids (clutch, brake, cooling, rear drive oil, fork)
-Change all filters (carb, sub carb, cruise, fuel)
-Change tire valves (preforably to all-metal type)
-Inspect wheel bearings
-Inspect brake pads, and especially the slider pins
-Verify bike runs smoothly at all speeds.

As long as it has properly cared for, a Goldwing does much better with more miles (lots of use) than too much time sitting idle. As mentioned above, things to check or at least ask him about since he is a friend.
The carbs have small passages and there are lots of sensor things. Sitting too long, especially with the water (alcohol) laden fuel we have can be hard on them and plug stuff up. That is one reason NOT to le the mileage scare you off.
Timing belts have been changed. He does not know about tensioners. I do not know how to check the remaining suggested items and he has not had those checked.
The engine is quiet and smooth, the brakes functioned well, new tires, all body parts intact.
There was oil residue on the bottom metal pan, seemed like exhaust was leaking a little at crossover.
He is asking $2500.
Run as fast as you can to the bank. Withdraw $2500 and go get that bike. Why can't I ever run across deals like this?
If the engine's running smoothly, new tires, all body parts intact & brakes good then ok, buy it! $2500 sounds like a good deal!

ABSOLUTELY!
This sounds VERY fair. Then, you can start perusing this site for how to look at that stuff.
Learned how to do my own timing belts on my 86 on this site.
So are you the new owner of this wing yet Bill, because if your not, for $2500, someone else is going to be really quickly I would think.

Oil leak could be shifter seal or check the drain tubes on the left side, they may not have the plug inserted on the ends or they drained them and spilled the contents.

Crossover can be replaced for a couple hundred bucks if needed (Ok, maybe $400).

GO BUY IT!!!!! :?
quick get it before he changes his mind, what a great price
He and I spoke today, am purchasing it Sunday, Thanx for the information!
Good Deal!!

Can't wait to see pics of her.
