1996 1500 SE Bank Angle Sensor

Hello all. I am loving this bike and it runs even better since I completed the maintenance list you all provided. My wife and I are planning a fairly long trip this month to the blue ridge mountains and in a final review of the workshop manual I discovered the BAS. I then researched Steve's list of recalls and noticed my bike had a recall. I have had no shut down problems of any kind. I put the bike on the center stand, cranked her up and let run until warm, and shook the handlebars as violently as I could side to side without tipping the bike. No problems. I read that this is another one that should be changed due to age, not miles, due to fluid evaporation over time. I am only up to 25 k original miles. Is this a priority or big deal? Since it passed the shake test I am hoping to go without tearing in to the bike again. Also, will Honda still honor the recall on a 1996 bike? :?Grateful for your 1500 experiences and thoughts on this. MD:waving:

I think the recall was for 88's I could be wrong. Also if it was replaced the dealer marked the frame, you can also have a dealer check the vin# to see if it was done.

If it's not screwing up when you test it, don't worry about it.
I know folks that ride with bad BAS and rarely trip it.
If it trips you just reach down and turn off the key and turn it back on. You can even do this while rolling but you will get an exhaust ignition bang when you do this but you can keep rolling or just pull over and do it. But the recall is a one time fix for the earliest years only. As was mentioned, call the dealer service dept and have them check the VIN.

I have a 90 and had mine replaced under recall about 3 years ago.
Mine went bad and needed to be done.
As Rudy said, if it passes the shake test just ride it.
Check the frame under near the brake perdal for an "X" stamped or scratched. This indicates the recall has been done, provided the dealer didn't forget to stamp it.
Double check the VIN anyway.
If it qualifies for recall then of course have it done.

Another way to bypass the BAS if it goes bad (other than replacement) is to drill a hole in it an while keeping it vertical fill with silicone, then let dry. This will lock the internal pendulum in place keeping it from tripping the sys.

Hey…. MD.

Don't worry about your 96…. the recall is for the 88-93 models. Your 96 has already been updated at the factory.

Ya know…. there are tricks and short cuts all through the motorcycle world. Some people have talked about it... but shorting the BAS is one thing I don't think is a good idea. It's there to keep the engine from over revving if the bike is laid down. I think that is a good idea. To me shorting the function of the BAS is sort of like short circuiting an artificial heart. The potential outcome could be bad.

As Ray has pointed out, that recall was for earlier models. Yours should be fine. If by chance you do have trouble with the BAS while out on a trip, here is how you could bypass it to get back home. Don't leave it that way though... could be dangerous to you or hazardous to the bike.
