The gear change shaft is quite sloppy, meaning lateral movement all around. This is on a 1998 goldwing trike I just bought. Should I be concerned about this? It seems to shift OK.

this is pretty normal but you could pull the cover and follow the shaft and there is another bolt that might be loose its hard to see but a socket and extension it can be reached

First question should be is it a heel toe shifter or original toe shifter??
the heel toe shifters tend to wear out the bushing that pivots the heel toe part, if you have the original toe shifter, you might look at it closer?? Does it leak oil?? my; 98 I had to replace the shifter seal last year.
