Bought a used 06 1800 about a month ago, wife and I have put on about 2800 miles so I decided to change the oil. Guy I bought it from stated he had changed it just before selling it...:?

Oil filter was covered with dirt and grit, and the was torqued so tight that I could hardly get it off:X

Do some people change the oil and not the filter?????? Guess that goes beyond my logic. Oh well, now I KNOW what was done.

Are there any other maintenance items I should be looking at doing before the snow flies???

Thanks in advance.....Bob

Honda reccomends checking valve clearance at 32,000 miles. Did previous owner keep maintanence records. I say "checking" because chances are they will not need shimmed with only this many miles. I would invest in a belly pan though to protect the oil filter and plastic coolant resoviour. Changing final drive oil would be a good idea. Check brakes. Other than that just enjoy it.

Thanks much Sethan12...It has a belly pan. I will check into the other stuff. I was reading about the valve clearance and the shimming involved in the service manual. I will probably enlist some assistance from a mechanic friend to do that. Brakes I can check myself.....Thanks again.

Yesterday I was at my local independent shop, a very well trusted guy my me and just about every GW rider I know here, and I asked him about the 32,000 mile valve check. His advice was not to worry about it. According to him, they'd checked many bikes with well over 100K, and found them to be well within specs. IMO, lots of the schedule in the manual is designed to generate business for the dealers. Having said that, I do change fluids on schedule.

Bobcat, I have found my filter to "seal" pretty good between changes. I don't over torque and in fact only hand tighten the filter when installing the new one, it just seems to happen. Same thing on my cages. Thank goodness for oil filter wrenches.

Also. may want to change out the clutch and brake fluid if it looks sorted brown???:waving:

Honda recommends changing plugs like every 16,000,and brake and clutch and anti freeze every 2 years. I would also change out the rear end fluid, and also check out the wear on the front brake pads at that mileage. You might want to start out fresh for peace of mind rather than trying to guess whats been done and what hasnt.
