got a friend that was taking off from a stop and suddenly he heard something "pop".

2002 gl 1800

thinking it may be the u-joint?, dont know the failure rate if the 1800's drive components.

the bike has about 45,000 miles on it an wasnt abused in any way

what is the diagnosis?

thanks

Were there other noises? If it broke a u-joint you would hear broken pieces in the swingarm while trying to move it.

Splines at the rear end of the driveshaft give out? If there are no sounds at the U-joint when turning the rear wheel on the center stand that would be where I might start.

Splines. probably. Like stated before, I would put it up on the center stand and start looking around.
