Previous poster obviously doesn't own a 2012 nor installed a cb on one.Anyways, the install is much easier now.It simply plugs in the trunk, where its always been in a 1800.It does require to remove the seat to run the antenna wire.Still have to drill holes into the trunk for antenna, which is dummy proof seems how Honda put crosshair marks on the inside of trunk. The top shelter is NOT removed

The previous GL1800 models also have the crosshair marks, which are a great help.

Can the CB unit from an older 1800 be directly installed in the 2012 or did they make changes that prevent such a move?

Yes the 2001-2010 OEM CB's can be installed in the 2012/13 Wings.
However, you need a 2012/13 conversion cable:

Anyone considering a CB and not already having the OEM should really check this one out:
For the 2001-2010 http://bikemp3.com/GL2WAY-Advanced-CB-System-2001-2010-V19-HGW-CBI-V01.htm
For the 2012/13 http://bikemp3.com/GL2WAY-Advanced-CB-System-For-2012-V19-HGW-CBI-V12.htm
Only difference is the hook up cable.
Also, anyone installing either CB should consider this antenna:

A very good single antenna
DON'T FORGET TO TUNE THE SWR!
I have been a CB'r since back in the day-Used to sell/install Mobiles and Base stations.
The GL2way system for the Wing is the best! It can be so much more than just a CB.
While you are checking out the GL2way, please consider one of these for your music listening pleasure:

Pete, the owner, has Blue Tooth items now available also!
Sounds like an advertisement and in a way I guess it is! I don't recommend anything unless I've been convinced it is the best!
Please note: It is now my understanding the single antenna w/spiltter requires modification to be compatable w/the 2012/13 OEM CB. IMO, another reason to consider the GL2way system.
