In filling my gas tank, the SE is taking 4.5 gallons and that's it. If memory serves me correctly, the SE is supposed to take 6.5 gallons, right? Am I missing something?

It's 24 litres, or 6.3 US gallons, or 5.3 Imperial gallons. The reserve (included in the first figures) is 5.3 litres/1.4 US/1.2 Imp gallons. It's the same from 88-2000 model years.

Problem is that asthe fuel guagemoves to"empty" I am filling up but the tank but it only accepts about 4.5 US gallons from the pump before it's full.

Oh, oh. Now I'm thinkingthe fuel guage is giving me a false reading. This makes sense becausemywarning "low fuel" light neverflashes/lights upeven thoughthe fuel guage indicates I'm near empty. I've always thought the low fuel light was out.

Could the fuel guage be stuck?Shortcuts to get it "unstuck" or do I need to take things apart to replace it?

You will most likely find that the sender unit in the gas tank is faulty Brian. You can take the unit out (drain some gas first) and check the sender strip. I had corrosion on mine and it cleaned up. Also you can bent the float arms, with some experienting you should be able to get it right.

My fuel gauge reads empty at about 160miles , then the low fuel light starts glowing which means I've got about 30 miles to get petrol.

Cant speak for the newer bikes. But my 77 Gl1000 with a 5 gal tank when the needle lines up on the E mark still has 1 1/2 gallons in it. I am below the mark before I ever switch to reserve. WIth the meter movement on that bike it has a fair amount of travel between the E and the actual peg stop.

Well disregard my previous post. On my ride home tonight I looked down at the gauge and went duh. I always considered the 2 end marks as E and F, because there were only 3 tick marks. I just now realized that the two end marks are 1/4 marks with the E and the F being the real empty and full.

I've never heard of a 1500 gas gauge that accurately reflected the tank content. Mine shows half with a quarter gone, all gone with half a tank, and from there it's off the scale. Most people suggest bending the float arm, but that's just trading one problem for another in my book. I suggested a new graphic behind the gauge arm, but it's more trouble than it's worth . . .
