76 won't start

I have been trying to resurrect an old 76..that has been sitting for 15 years.
Here's the back round..valves set to spec, timing static timed to spec, gas from a temp source..clean..so no rust, no tank, no filter or pump issues. Carbs cleaned and rebuilt.

I have good spark on all plugs, points, timing or valves set correctly..checked twice. I even tried a little starter fluid still nothing..not even a cough..only thing not checked has been compression..that's next on my list..any other ideas???

Tried starting with choke out and in..heard difference in tone so choke seems OK.

All ideas appreciated..I stumped..

For those who remember I was working on this bike two months ago and took a break until now..it worn me down.

Do you have a nice fat blue spark on the plug you removed and laid on ground as you crank.....with the kill switch on?
imported post

nope tried it with it in the run position. what's the point of looking for a spark with the kill switch on??
imported post

I think he meant with the kill switch in the ON (RUN) position. Anyway I think you said you had good spark. Is the gas getting to the cylinder? If so, try swapping the primary leads on the coils. If they have gotten switched in the rebuild process, your spark will be 180 degrees out of time. The Y and B/Y wires.

It's got to be fuel, air, or spark. My guess is spark. If it's coughing through the carbs your coils are hooked up wrong. I speak from experience on this one!

I have nothing..no pop, no cough nothing..I have switched the leads to the coils in the picture still nothing..

Timing is right on..static method, valves are set correctly checked twice .1" fits and .13" doesn't. .004mm

Cranks over nicely battery is good and is now recharging from all the cranking..

Plugs show wet..but clean..

Compression is low only 90..but it still should at least pop..right???

Put about a tablespoon of oil in each cylinder and see if it will build a little more compression.

If the plugs are wet and the compression is low it's not going to fire. If you have other plugs put them in, if not pull the ones that you have and dry them with a propane torch. Pull number one plug and bring up the piston on compression stroke and see if that plug fires before tdc. on the timing hole. I think that you just had to many oopses.

Do not laugh at this because it works. put your back tire on a tread mill. put your bike in 3rd gear, turn on your key, pull in the clutch & start the tread mill. Now let your clutch out & listen to that engine cranking over with full power going to your plugs instead of the starter. You can crank that bike for an hour strait if you have to!!!

Check for spark when piston is at top dead center on compression just incase you are 180 degrees off.

That's a great idea!Really thinking outside the box. Do you think "Gold's" will let me bring my wing for a workout?

I once saw a roller set up, about 4' wide. The rear tire ofa running bike was used to "power" the roller. The rear tire of a non-running bike wasturned by the other end of the roller. This saved a lot of manual cranking but took but took at least 2 guys and one running bike.

Hatchetman,
May I come visit you some time... cause I started laughing my a*) off reading your first line... However, I have read many of your responses over the months and they are Great! Many have been very creative. I made it to Vancouver BC for a summer on the Island @ a beach next to Black beach, and I found BC to be the most beautiful place I had been. Anyway, long winded.. I had to say what a great idea. (Many who have those treadmills haven't used them for anything else. LOL

A failing condenser will show a faint spark out in the open but fail under the compression stroke. Might swap it, don't piggyback.
imported post

I think I have a spare condenser will give it a try...thanks although the spark looks good.
imported post

Very hard to believe that with spark and fuel you haven't heard some noise out of it yet.
imported post

unless valve timing is off resulting in crappy compression or spark timing is 180 out.
imported post

180° out it would backfire through the carbs. At least that's noise.
