I've been having a problem with the bike loading up on fuel at idle. I just bought it so I have no history. I wanted to try some things before I attacked the carbs so I tried the Kawasaki carb cleaner soak. That did not fix it but did flush a lot of crap out.

Next I went for the air valve. Once I got it off I found 2 o-rings missing and a bad attempt at trying to seal one of them with RTV. I put a vacuum pump on it and found it was not working that's when I found the second o-ring missing. So I fix that and put it back on thinking I may have cured my problem but no such luck.

I started it without the air filter housingand looking down into the air box I see fuel coming out of both right side carbs and running across the floor of the air box. So I have found my problem and the carbs need to come off.

My question is could this be a bad float or needle and seat or are there orings between the carb and the air box that could be missing? It does not leak fuel externally.

If I buy a rebuild kit for the carbs do they come with all the seals, including any needed between the carb and air box?

Are the intake elbows sealed with O-rings at the head (mine have RTV on them now) and if so are those included in a carb kit or do I need to get them seperately.

I'm looking to buy the Honda rebuild kits. I've ssen them for about $35.00 per carb.

Hi, I experienced the exact same conditions. My carbs were also flooding, causing the same air chamber leak + external leaks. I luckily had a second rack of carbs from which i got the fuel seals/o-rings that fit in between the carb bodies and the carb plenum. Go to randakks.com He's a specialist on these bikes and sells repro o-rings that are supposedly better and cheaper than spec. He has a 'master' rebuild kit that might be a good investment -- cheaper and more thorough than Honda.

Yeah, sounds like the PO botched it pretty bad. Like Mag said, get the Randakk kits and do it right. Randakk also sells his kits on ebay. And yes, there are O-rings between the heads and intake runners.

If Randakk doesn't have kits for the '78 (his focus is on the '75 - '77), the special plenum to carb O-rings he sells should still work on your '78.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah the POdid some stupid things. He claimed he had rebuilt and syncd the carbs but it looks like what he did was pull a bunch of stuff apart and loose all the seals.:X

I'm going to order a seal kit from Randakksbut he's out on vacation until the 7th. I hope once I getthe carbs apart that the internals are ok.After loloking at the site I'm sure those carb to plenum fuel seals (or "packing seals" as Honda calls them) are the problem.

I'm going to check with a local Honda dealer to see what I can get from them. If I need one float or two float valves or something like that I'd like to be able to pick them up locally.
