Hey guys, ijust purcahsedan '81 1100 standard model and recently had the carbs rebuilt and synch'd. I seem to be running a little lean and need to set them richer. I can reset all but one which will only allow a little under 1/4 turn due to the limiter capon the pilot screw . Is removal of the limiter cap inevitable so i can reset all 4 equally. I've tried to reset one of the leanest carbs to see if it had any affect but my idle was uneven and somewhat lower than normal. Is it better to reset all four equally or can i reset them individually?
cvs1100, if only one of your carbs has a pilot limiter still on it I would seriously doubt the quality of carb rebuild you received. It sounds like the carbs weren't fully taken apart.

To get an even & correct low throttle setting you must re-set all those pilot needles at the same time. They might not all end up at the same setting but should be pretty close to the same. If you have an out-layer it probably stillhas a dirt problem.

All the pilot screws are still intact and all o-rings and rubbers were replaced including the air cutoffs and intake o-rings due to the previous owner using starter fluid and or carb cleaner. The rubbers were literally MELTED. The mechanic saved the rubbers for me and they smelled like burnt electrical wiring. As far as the idle goes it purrrs like a kitten and has very strong acelleration. It does hesitate a tadbefore it warms up goodbuti'mrather used to sport bikes (CB750's) and new to cruisers as far as quick throttle response. I'm really concerned about the lean running due to overheating.Exactly whatdid you meanbyout-layer and the dirt.
cva1100, an out-layer is something that is different than the rest. By your first post it sounded like you might have had a carb that wasn'toverhauled correctly.

By your second post it now sounds more like you just think you have a lean condition.

Why do you think you are running lean? At what engine RPM & throttle position do you think it's running lean?

I'm judging the condition by the appearance of the spark plugs. They're not the medium brown but white in color. Usuallya sign of being too lean. I presume that the limiter caps are attached with loctite and wasn't quite sure if i should remove them to reset the mixture.
cvs1100, you really can't judge much on the Wing by reading the spark plugs. With modern emission friendly fuel they all seem to run pretty white. You have to go more by the runability, lean carbs will run pretty poorly & you will get a lot of popping in the intake.

I really can't say for sure on the 1100 but on my 1200 the plugs are pure white, except if I idle it in traffic a lot. I have the needles raised with small washers to richen the tip-in a little & they still run white.

Even if you want to richen your 1100 a little, using the pilot needles to do that won't help much as that really effects the low speed settings (idle to about 1/3 throttle)& you sure won't get any engine damage there. If you want to effect the mixture in the engine operating range that damage could occur you will have to work with the needles or needle jets.

If I remember correctly there was a service bulletin on the 1100 for installing richer needles or needle jets. That was more for a poor runability problem than for engine life though.
