I have a bad cylinder in my ride and it is cheaper and easier to do an engine swap rather than a rebuild I think. My question is what year engines can I put in that frame?

Welcome fellow Arkie, yes I know but you should fill out your profile anyway. Any 1100 engine bolts fight in with no modifications but any 1000 or 1200 engine also bolts in but some mods have to be done to make it work.

Welcome and Hello. It will be less expensive to replace your engine as some internal parts are unobtainable . What do you mean by a "bad cylinder" ? Is it scored or just not firing? Do you have a bad carburetor or coil perhaps ? 1980-1983 engines will be your choice. Though a few folks have installed the 1200 engine its not a direct plug and play.

75 to 83 bolts right in but electrics are a little different on the 75-79's and differences within those years too!!

Well, the 84 motor that bolted right into my 81 frame says otherwise. As already mentioned, electrical is a different matter since the 1100 does not have an electric fuel pump. Other than the fuel pump, the other electrical difference was the ignition, but I didn't use a stock 1100 or 1200 ignition when I was finished.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I took my bike to the local Honda dealer who I don't think is a fan of older wings and they told me the bearings are out in the left rear piston and that they couldn't even get the parts to repair it. He recommended riding it in town till it blew up...

The bike shop I usually use says he is full of crap but that he doesn't have time till winter to take on a rebuild. He recommended I look around for another engine and I am happy to say that I found an 83 GL1100 with 199 - 201 lbs of compression from a salvage shop in Florida. I should be back on the road by mid May...

The Over Drive gearing of the 83 coupled with the larger rear wheel of the 81 will give you some seriously high gearing.:grin3:
