Well after setting the timing wrong and breaking a valve and piston, I'm finally ready to rebuild my motor. I bought the last two .50 over piston in the US and finally found two more in the UK which arrive a couple of days ago. Today off to the machine shop to have her bored and honed. I'm going to take pictures of the rebuild if anyone is interested. I'll keep you informed on the progress, Coot

Hey Coot!

Good luck with the rebuild! I am planning to strip down my external bits and "refreshing" them over the winter months myself.

Thanks Guys, I have almost finished porting the heads and I'll post some before and afterwards picsof the ports. After porting the headI will need to rejet the carbs, is there a kit for this bike (very unlikely), and also does anyone know where I can acquire some new exhaust valves, the intakes are easy to find at $10 apiece but the exhaust arepricey. Thanks for the help, Coot

Hello all, and happy new year. I just picked up the bored cylinders from the machine shop and am ready to start rebuilding her. First I need to gap the rings andI have a clymer manual but would like to know what the Honda factory manual has the ring gap at. Hopefully I can get her ready for some spring riding, if not I'll just have to ride the 91 Ducati 851 I bought myself for Christmas. Let me know about the ring gap, Thanks Coot

Okay Coot, here's the measurements from my 1100 manual:

Top and Second Ring End Gap:

Standard: 0.004 - 0.012" Service limit" 0.02"

Oil Ring Side Rail End Gap:

Standard:0.008 - 0.035" Service limit: 0.04"

Top ring is chamfered on top and bottom edges with a bevel, widest edge down.

Second ring has a 30 degree bevel with the widest edge down.

Markings on the rings go toward the top of the piston as per normal practice.

:clapper:Thanks for the info exavid, Coot

hey coot, I had to replace the heads on my 1100 about 2 months ago as exavid can testify to (several bent valves). If there is anything on these heads that you can use let me know. You're welcome to any or all. Right now they are expensive door stops!:)

Thanks Teacher,I bought two off of ebay, the guy would only sell them in sets. They cleaned up well. I have since ported the heads and matched portedeach intake manifold. I am still waiting on the new valves that I have ordered.

Also I tore the carbs totally apart, including removing the butter fly valves, and blasted the bodies. Applied a light coat of silverGun Kote and reassemble them, replacing all the o rings and the plenum gasket, they look better than new. With the port job I know I'm going to have jetting probs. Any body know if they ever offer a jetting kit for these carbs? If you have never heard of gun coat it is the toughest coating out there. Gos on light and impervious to about every chemical including brake fluid andstripper. They also sell the moly coating high performancepistons come with on the skirts. Thanks again Coot

would be great if you posted the entire rebuild on a web site.

Hi again, look at the one of theintakes ofa gl1100 carb, twobig round head screws holding the butterfly valve in, not good for air flow entering the engine. I'll post a picture of the mod performed Sunday- no more screw heads. Coot

Hello glasgowing, I'll help as much as I can. The plenum gasket has to be ordered form Honda. The rest of the gaskets come with highquality carb kits. If you are able to dismantle the carbs and get them back together I can talk you thru the coating process, and I know you will get lots of help here on the reassembly. It's allot easier than putting a valve head thruthe piston like me, Coot.

Gun Kote sounds like the stuff to stop our British road salt/grit from eating our alloy bits. Is it a spray & is it available in UK? My GL1100 engine and carbs are in some state. I'm aboutto remove engine to fix the starter clutch so that'll be a good time toattempt a clean up job. I don't expect any problems with the mechanics of stripping the carbs.

Is it safe enough toblast the enginewhilst intact, obviously with the ports and drive shaft blocked off?

One more Q, because of a centre stand problem I am going to use a rear paddock stand to raise and steady the bike for engine removal etc. Any known issues orproblems,i'm thinking along the lines ofare they strong enough?
