81 speedo quit

The speedo (and the tach, last year) has quit after lots of loud squealing. how can i tell if it is the unit or the cable?

Disconnect the cable at the back of the speedo and take a short ride, if it's the cable it will still squeal.

When you disconnect the cable pull the inner part at both ends to see if it's broken off.
