Hi
I just joined this site after searching for some answers... Looks like a great site:clapper:

I have a few questions, FYI, this is my first touring bike, all previous have been sport bikes..

First question. My GW needs front calipers, I went to the local bike shop and they want $350 per caliper:shock:then he told me it would be alot cheaper to rebuild them...How big of a PIA is this? I have rebuilt car calipers before, so is it the same basic princible only smaller?

Second (and prolly pretty stupid) whats the differances between the touring bikes (Goldwing, Aspencade,Interstate)

Thanx in advance for yalls help:waving:

1. Have an 82 myself and got a price like that for the rear one. guess a rebuild is the way to go.
2. What he said.:gunhead:

Depending on how much the bike sat, and how much it was abused, rebuilding may not even be necessary, just a real good cleaning.

If you are handy, you will need to unbolt the calipers, but do NOT disconnect the brake lines yet. While the calipers are hanging there, stick a small screwdriver blade in between the brake pads and pump up the brake lever. Make sure the resevoir doesn't go dry too.... When the pistons are squeezing the brake pads, remove the screwdriver and brake pads. Stick something smaller and smaller in there and keep pumping. Basically, you are trying to force the pistons out of the calipers with brake fluid. Make sure you try and get all 4 pistons out at nearly the same time. Once one piston comes out, you have no more pressure anywhere. Unless you pinch off the brake line with a vise-grip or something like that. When the piston pops out, you'll have plenty of fluid, so have the rags ready!

yeah, you can use compressed air to get the pistons out, but if they are badly crudded up, you'll never have enough pressure to free the pistons with air.

Once the pistons are out, you remove the seals (two per piston) and replace them. Make sure you clean out the caliper and especially the grooves where the seals go. There are many places to get caliper rebuild kits, I like to use http://www.partsnmoreonline.com (For some reason, the board is filtering out the web address). There are others too.

The difference in the '82 Aspencade and Interstate isn't much. Already mentioned here, plus the two tone paint, colored seat, etc.. In '83 they gave it a nice digital dash.

There were three models. The Goldwing Standard which is also referred to as naked, theInterstate whichhad saddlebags, trunk and fairing and you could add the radio/CB andIntercom, and the Aspencade (fully loaded) which had an on board air compressor (great for blowing up balloons) vented disc brakes, wider seat and two tonepaint. I have an 83Aspencade and it also has a digital dash and mileage meter that will count up or down for a trip. I also just sold my 83 Standard. It felt like a sports bike compared to the Aspencade, but I love my Aspen.

I want to especially note the vented disc brakes because the front forks are different too.The Aspencade, to the best of my knowledge, will not interchangewith the other models due to the different position of the front calibers. The Calibers may be different also.

:waving::waving:Welcome to the Best Goldwing Site on the Internet, DigbyODell!:waving::waving:

As the guys say, it's really an easy job rebuilding the calipers. You can get all the pads and the seals and dust covers for less than the quoted price of one caliper. If the rotors are in good condition the job will probably take half a day the first time.
