Ok about as dumb a question as it gets here. It seems the clutch on our 82 is dead in the water. It does not return when you release the clutch lever, and won't engage at all when pulled. I DO have an 83 parts bike, don't know how good the clutch is on it as I never rode it. But it's at least working I am hoping.

Question is how interchangable are these and does anyone have an idiots guide to changing one? Never done it before but I need the bike as it's my main transportation. Hap's Honda wants $400 to do it (if they have the parts)....so yea...not on what the VA pays disabled vets. I'm optionless at this point.

if i'm not wrong, and i sometimes am, you should be able to change over the plates and disks, anything more is probably require pulling the engine.

Is the cable broken? Look at the lever down on the side of the engine and see if it moves when you pull the lever. Yes the parts do interchange and it's not too bad a job to change but you do need a tool for the center nut. I think there may be a tutorial somewhere on that. Lay your parts bike over on the left side and take it apart first to see how it works.

I noticed it pulling into work. The cable felt slack and if I remember, wouldn't return when I released the clutch lever. I knew the cable was not so good. Sure enough it broke right as I pulled into the parking lot (thank GOD). I do have another cable, but there is no spring tension on the old cable at all. I can pull it and push it both ways. Which led me to believe something in the clutch itself is shot.

I believe you just need to change the cable and see what happens. If there is anything wrong it is just in the mechanism in the clutch cover, not the clutch itself.

FirstVet:
First, thank you for your Service.
Second, I started a thread that you should read. Also watch the video I linked at the bottom. Forgive me for using a tiny bike in the video, but I was trying to prove a point.
The bike in the video absolutely will not start unless the neutral light is on, unlike the Goldwings that will start in any gear so long as the clutch is pulled. Please check out this thread:
